What Do You Need to Know About Installing a Home Security System?
Installing a home security system is tedious work, but all of the added safety it brings to you and your family is well worth it! But if you want to make your system’s installation as successful as possible, there are a few things you need to know.
The first thing you need to know is that installing a home security system is best left to the professionals. Unless you’ve got a very extensive handy-person background and a whole bunch of great tools, installing this equipment is going to be beyond your skill level. There’s nothing wrong with admitting that. In fact, admitting it will prevent you from winding up with a security system that doesn’t work properly – or at all!
That being said, here’s what you need to know about YOUR role, once your professional installer arrives:
- You’re in charge of getting the cost specifics
Installing a home security system may cost a couple hundred dollars or more, depending on how advanced your system is and how large your home is. If you don’t want to wind up with any cost surprises, make sure you know each and every fee you’re responsible for. Get a thorough explanation of the expenses before your installer gets to work!
- You need to learn how to “family-proof” your system
The pro who installs your home security system can show you how to prevent false alarms – like when Dad wanders through the motion detectors in the middle of the night on his way to the fridge. But unless you take this responsibility very seriously, you could wind up with an alarm that goes off at all kinds of random times!
- You need to ask about landlines
If you’re not getting a cellular-based security system, you need to make sure that your alarm won’t require its own dedicated landline. Most of today’s systems WON’T, but this is a question you need to get answered in advance, instead of while your installer is standing on your doorstep!
- You’re in charge of notifying the insurance company
Installing a home security system can save you a bundle on your homeowner’s insurance premiums – up to 20%, to be exact! But in order to get your discount, you’ll need to provide some sort of documentation to your insurance company. So, ask your installer if his receipt will work, or if you’ll need to get something more specific from the alarm company.
